5 arrested for Sohag murder in Mitford, one remanded

DHAKA, July 12, 2025 (BSS) - Police so far arrested five persons for the brutal killing of scrap vender Sohag at Mitford area in the old party of the city, police sources said here today.

They also brought one of the arrestees-Titon Gazi in a five-day remand from a metropolitan magistrate court to interrogate him in this connection. 
The other arrested persons are- Mahmudul Hassan Mohin,41, Alamgir, 28, Monir alias Chhoto Monir,25 and Tarek Rahman alias Robin,22.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Lalbagh division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Jasim Uddin said that the heinous killing was taken place following a business rivalry, not for extortion. 

Police have already arrested five persons for their alleged involvement in the killing and trying to nab the other offenders by scrutinizing video footage, mobile recording and statements of eyewitnesses. 

Meanwhile, Inspector (Investigation) of Kotwali Thana Nasir Uddin, who is also the Investigation Officer (IO) of the case, produced Titon Gazi,33, before the court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) with a prayer for granting his seven days remand. 

After hearing the statement of the prosecution, metropolitan magistrate Hasib Ullah Pias, on behalf of the CMM, granted his five-day police remand.

Titon was arrested by Kotwali Police from Zinda Bahar area on Friday.
 
Scrap vender Lal Chand alias Sohag was mercilessly chopped and hit by stone at Rojoni Ghosh Lane near Mitford Hospital at about 6:00 pm on July 9 last following a business feud. He was killed on the spot. 

Sohag, 39, was the son of Yusuf Ali Hawlader of Purbo Mamabari village under Keraniganj Model Thana. 

Manjuara Begum, elder sister of Sohag, on July 10 filed a case with Kotwali Thana accusing 19 people for the killing.
