KHULNA, July 18, 2025 (BSS) – Students, teachers, officers and employees of the Khulna University (KU) observed day-long various programmes today to commemorate the first martyrdom anniversary of Mir Mahfuzur Rahman Mugdho.

Mughdha, a former student of the Mathematics Discipline of KU, was gunned down by police at the Uttara Azampur area capital during a clash between police and the Anti-Discrimination Students Movements, when he was distributing drinking water saying “Pani Lagbe Pani.’

After killing of Mughdha, students-people geared up the anti fascist movement in the capital as elsewhere across the country.

The day was marked with a series of programmes to honor his sacrifice and that of others who lost their lives in the historic movement.

A memorial meeting titled "July Uprising and Tribute to Shaheed Mir Mugdho" was held at the university’s Liaquat Ali Auditorium around 5pm.

Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Dr. Md. Rezaul Karim addressed the event as the chief guest. The event was also adressed by Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Harun-or-Rashid Khan and Treasurer Professor Dr. Md. Nurunnabi as special guests.

Director of Student Affairs Professor Dr. Md. Nazmus Sadat presided over the event while the welcome speech was delivered by Professor Dr. Md. Azmal Huda, Head of the Mathematics Discipline.

Speakers at the meeting emphasized that the July Uprising was born from a deep desire for change and transformed into a mass movement that claimed the lives of numerous students and civilians.

They asserted that these martyrs sacrificed their lives in pursuit of a new, just Bangladesh, and it is the nation’s responsibility to realize that dream.

Reflecting on Mir Mugdho’s martyrdom, the speakers described him as a lasting symbol of inspiration for the youth of Bangladesh.

They noted that KU has already taken initiatives to preserve his memory and has more plans for the future.

Importantly, the university has officially recognized July 18 as "Shaheed Mir Mugdho Day", a designation approved by the university syndicate.

Acting Dean of the School of Law Professor Sheikh Mahmudul Hasan, Professor Dr. Md. Yasin Ali from Agrotechnology, Professor Dr. Md. Ashiqur Rahman from Urban and Rural Planning, and Assistant Professor Abul Bashar from History and Civilization were, among others, present.

Student activists of July Uprising in Khulna, including Minhazul Abedin Shompod, Al Shahriar, Ayman Ahad, Syed Md. Rumman, and Shamim, also shared their experiences.

General Secretary of the Officers’ Welfare Association SM Mohammad Ali addressed the gathering as well.

Earlier, the VC inaugurated two commemorative installations: the Shaheed Mir Mugdho Memorial Corner and the Shaheed Mir Mugdho Water Corner in the Mathematics Discipline, with participation from faculty, students, and staff.

Following Friday prayers, a special prayer session was held at the university’s Central Jame Mosque for the soul of Shaheed Mir Mugdho and all other martyrs.

Later, a prayer session was also held at the university temple for peace of the martyrs’ souls, attended by members of the university’s Hindu community.
