CHATTOGRAM, July 26, 2025 (BSS)- Shipping Advisor Brigadier General (Retd) M Sakhawat Hossain has said the government has decided to procure three new ocean going vessels for the Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC).

“The government is taking this step to boost income and strengthen the capacity of the state-owned BSC,” he said after inspecting ship recycling at KSRM Ship-breaking Yard in Sitakunda today.

The Shipping Advisor said 14 ship-breaking yards in Chattogram have already obtained the Green Shipyard Certificate in accordance with the Hong Kong Convention for the safe and environmentally sound recycling of ships. More ship-yards are under the certification process,” he added.

“But if any ship-breaking yard fails to meet the environmental and safety standards will be closed down,” he said.

Sakhawat Hossain said many yards are still struggling to fully comply with the international regulations. He assured giving all support from the government to achieve the compliance and improve standards.
