DHAKA, July 27, 2025 (BSS) - The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) today upheld a High Court (HC) judgment that scrapped the proceedings of a defamation case against Chief Adviser of the interim government Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus.

A three-member apex court bench headed by Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury passed the order, dismissing a state petition filed against the High Court judgment.

Additional Attorney General Aneek Rushd Haque stood for the state, while advocate on record Md. Taufique Hossain appeared for Professor Yunus.

JASAD joint secretary Nazrul Islam Chunnu filed the case in 2010 for statement made by the Nobel laureate in 2007. A petition was filed with the High Court in 2011, pleading to scrap the proceedings of the case. The High Court on October 24, 2024, in its judgment scrapped the proceedings of the case.

The state, however, filed a leave to appeal petition against the High Court judgment. A chamber judge court of the Appellate Division later set July 27 for holding hearing on the matter at the apex court regular bench.
