Veteran journalist Alamgir Mohiuddin laid to rest

DHAKA, Aug 23, 2025 (BSS) - Renowned journalist Alamgir Mohiuddin, a member of the Board of Directors of the Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) and founding editor of the Daily Naya Diganta, was laid to eternal rest at Rayer Bazar Intellectuals Graveyard in the capital this evening.

He was laid to rest at the graveyard around 8:30pm, following the namaz-e-janaza after Maghrib prayer at the Monipuri Para Krishi Laboratories Mosque in the capital's Farmgate area.

Alamgir Mohiuddin's namaz-e-janaza was attended by Khelafat Majlis joint secretary general Prof. Md. Abdul Jalil, former BFUJ president and Journalists Welfare Trust chairman M Abdullah, DUJ president Shahidul Islam, general secretary Khurshid Alam, former DUJ general secretary and Naya Diganta feature editor Muhammad Baker Hossain, Jamaat-e-Islami's Dhaka South naib-e-ameer Advocate Helal Uddin and other prominent political, social and professional figures.

Widespread condolences poured in from across the country, with leaders from various sectors mourning the loss of a veteran voice in Bangladeshi journalism.
Information and Broadcasting Adviser Md Mahfuj Alam expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of Alamgir Mohiuddin.

Besides, Chairman of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) Board of Directors Anwar Aldin and BSS Managing Director and Chief Editor Mahbub Morshed shared condolences at the death of this veteran journalist.

They prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family.

Alamgir Mohiuddin breathed his last around 1:30 pm today at the age of 83 while receiving treatment at a city hospital, confirmed a source from the Daily Naya Diganta.

Mohiuddin was hospitalized at Anwar Khan Modern Medical College Hospital on May 30 following a sudden illness at his residence.

After a brief recovery, he was discharged and returned home, but his condition deteriorated again, necessitating another hospitalization last week.

Doctors reported that Mohiuddin had been suffering from a mineral imbalance, involving fluctuations in essential elements such as sodium, magnesium, calcium and potassium. 

Besides, he had a range of other health issues, including urinary complications, respiratory difficulties and blood pressure fluctuations.


Mohiuddin's passing follows the loss of his wife four years ago. He leaves behind two daughters.

Born in Natore district, Mohiuddin's illustrious career in journalism began shortly after the country's independence.

He served the national news agency as a senior reporter, contributing significantly to its growth and stature. He was also deeply involved in the editorial leadership of the Daily Naya Diganta.

Mohiuddin's academic journey began at Nazim Uddin High School in Chanchkoir. 

Later, he attended Rajshahi College for his higher secondary education. An alumnus of Rajshahi University, he graduated with a bachelor's degree in English and was the university's second batch student.
