DHAKA, Sept 2, 2025 (BSS)- A seminar on “Piloting Locally Developed AI in Radiology: A Collaborative Initiative between BMU & BUET” was organized jointly by Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) and Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).
Department of Radiology and Imaging of this university and the Department of Biomedical Engineering of BUET organized the seminar at the lecture hall of BMU Super Specialized Hospital here, said a press release.
BUET Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Abu Borhan Mohammad Badruzzaman addressed the seminar as the chief guest while BMU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md Shahinul Alam presided over the seminar.
This seminar was organized as part of the dissemination of the research project titled “An Artificial Intelligence (AI) Enabled Web-Application for Assistive Online Reporting of Radiological Images” under the supervision of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, BUET.
The project was funded by the World Bank.
BUET VC Prof Badruzzaman said AI has taken a special place in this world of advanced technology. AI is capable of making a special contribution to the development of medical science, he said.
However, to get effective benefits from AI, it is necessary to develop AI locally in different countries as the place and environment are different, he added.
The BUET VC said the development and use of AI is essential not only in radiology, oncology, pathology, but also in various branches of medical science.
He said if BMU and BUET work together, the healthcare sector in the country will take a step forward as many things including medical record keeping are possible with the use of AI.
BMU VC Prof Shahinul Alam said, if BMU and BUET work together, the healthcare sector in Bangladesh will enter a new era as new innovations, discoveries, and inventions will bring welfare to patients.
He said they will play a huge role in improving the quality of the healthcare sector and the suffering of patients will be alleviated.
Prof Shahinul said if doctors and engineers work together, the door to new and improved medical services will be opened in the healthcare sector of the country.
The real beneficiaries of which will be the patients, he said adding it is the demand of the time for doctors and engineers to work together.
BMU Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Prof Dr. Md. Abul Kalam Azad, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research and Development) Professor Dr. Md. Mujibur Rahman Howlader, Treasurer Professor Dr. Nahrin Akhtar, Registrar Professor Dr. Md. Nazrul Islam, and Chairman of the Department of Clinical Oncology Professor Dr. Syed Md. Akram Hossain, among others also spoke.
BUET teacher Professor Dr. M Tariq Arafat presented an article on biomedical engineering at the seminar.
BUET teacher Professor Dr. Toufiq Hasan presented the main article on the necessity and importance of AI in radiology.
BMU's Faculty of Paediatrics Dean Professor Dr. Md. Atiar Rahman, Faculty of Medical Technology Dean Professor Dr. M. Abu Hena Chowdhury, Faculty of Dental Dean Associate Professor Dr. Sakhawat Hossain Sayanto and other BMU teachers, doctors, and officials were present in the seminar.
BUET's Pro Vice-Chancellor and project engineers were also present.
