DHAKA, Sept 04, 2025 (BSS) - Bangladesh Journalist Welfare Trust (BJWT) today distributed cheques of welfare grants amounting to Taka 2.10 crore to 320 journalists, including the families of fifteen deceased journalists.
Information and Broadcasting Secretary Mahbuba Farjana distributed the cheques at a function at the DFP auditorium at Tathya Bhaban here.
In her speech, Mahbuba Farjana said journalists are the conscience of the nation, as they play an important role in bringing positive changes in society.
Highlighting the current situation of the country, she said that the responsibility of journalists has increased significantly. Along with fulfilling this responsibility, journalists will also have to play a neutral role in the upcoming national elections, she added.
The secretary said that since the establishment of the trust, a total of Taka 54 crore 81 lakh 76 thousand has been distributed among journalists. The government is working sincerely to provide healthcare to journalists, she added.
She assured the journalists of all-out cooperation on behalf of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
Managing Director of Bangladesh Journalists Welfare Trust Muhammad Abdullah said 3,428 journalists have been provided welfare grants of Taka 10.70 crore from the trust in the last year. In addition, the families of five journalists martyred in the July Uprising and 192 injured journalists have been given honorariums, certificates, and an amount of Taka 54 lakh, he added.
At the same time, he said, 305 children of journalists have been given educational scholarships totaling Taka 55.26 lakh.
Department of Mass Communication Director General Faizul Haque, Press Institute of Bangladesh Director General Faruk Wasif, and members of the Board of Trustees of the BJWT—Shaheen Hasnat, Md. Alauddin, and Chiraranjan Sarkar, younger brother of the recently deceased journalist Bibhuranjan Sarkar, among others—spoke at the event.
