Tarique Rahman condoles death of Badruddin Umar

DHAKA, Sept 7, 2025 (BSS) - Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) acting chairman Tarique today expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of prominent thinker, writer and veteran politician Badruddin Umar. 

In a condolence message, the BNP acting chairman said, "BNP and I are deeply saddened by the passing of Badruddin Umar, a pioneer of progressive left-wing politics, writer, teacher, intellectual and politician."

A press release signed by senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi revealed the information. 

Tarique Rahman highlighted Umar's independent spirit and fearless voice, stating that his death has created a sense of despair among the public. 

He emphasized Umar's unique ability to deeply understand the dignity and profound suffering of the people.

"From the Language Movement of 1952 to the independence of the country and the struggle against all forms of autocracy, the thought, writings, and active involvement of late Badruddin Umar are unforgettable," the BNP leader said. 

He added: "Umar's research-oriented books on various political, social, cultural, and economic transformations during the nation's critical moments are a priceless asset, highly esteemed by readers. Despite facing repeated government wrath, Umar remained unyielding and steadfast in his ideals, refusing to be deterred by fear or threats. He never hesitated to express his independent views, defying autocratic rule and acting as a symbol of independent conscience in the country."

The BNP acting chairman prayed for the eternal peace of Badruddin Umar's soul and extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members, admirers, and well-wishers.

Umar passed away this morning on his way to Bangladesh Specialized Hospital in Shyamoli.
