Bangladesh Embassy Complex inaugurated in Thimphu

DHAKA, Sept 9, 2025 (BSS) – The new complex of the Bangladesh Embassy in Thimphu was inaugurated today, marking a milestone in Bangladesh-Bhutan relations.

Bhutan Princess Eeuphelma Choden graced the ceremony as the chief guest, according to a message received here this afternoon. 

Bhutanese Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay, Chief Justice Norbu Tshering, National Council Chairperson Sangay Dorji, Foreign Affairs and External Trade Minister D.N. Dhungyel and Energy and Renewable Resources Minister Gem Tshering also attended the event.

From Bangladesh, Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam and Senior Secretary of the Planning Commission M A Akmall Hossain Azad were present, alongside senior officials, business leaders and dignitaries from both countries.

Speakers at the ceremony underscored the historic ties of friendship between Bangladesh and Bhutan and expressed confidence that the new chancery building would elevate bilateral relations to new heights.

During his visit, the Bangladesh Foreign Secretary had an audience with His Majesty the King of Bhutan. 

He also held meetings with the Bhutanese Prime Minister, Foreign Minister and Foreign Secretary.

Discussions centered on expanding trade and connectivity, including the prospect of signing a Free Trade Agreement and enhancing air connectivity between the two countries.

Both sides reviewed the progress of the Bhutanese Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Kurigram, Bangladesh, and explored its potential linkage with Bhutan’s Gelephu Mindfulness City project.

The Foreign Secretary reaffirmed Bangladesh’s support for His Majesty the King’s vision for the Gelephu project.

Bhutan expressed keen interest in exporting hydropower to Bangladesh, while the two sides also discussed expanding internet connectivity and opportunities for skilled Bangladeshi professionals to contribute to Bhutan’s workforce.
