CHATTOGRAM, Sept 13, 2025 (BSS) - The constitution of the Chittagong University Central Students' Union (CUCSU) has been officially revised, with the abolition of four joint secretary posts and the introduction of four new secretarial positions.
CU Pro-Vice Chancellor (admin) and CUCSU constitution drafting committee head Prof. Dr. Md. Kamal Uddin announced the changes this afternoon.
He said the revisions were made in response to longstanding demands from students and stakeholders who sought a more contemporary and functional student representative body.
Under the revised structure, the joint secretary positions that were previously part of the hall unions have been removed. In their place, several new roles have been created to address emerging areas of student concern and interest.
Two of these are the 'Social Service and Environment Affairs Secretary' and the 'Law and Human Rights Affairs Secretary', which replace the earlier combined role covering both areas.
Additionally, three other posts have been added -- 'Library and Cafeteria Affairs Secretary', 'Liberation War and Democratic Movement Affairs Secretary', and 'Career Development and International Affairs Secretary'. Despite these changes, the total number of CUCSU posts remains unchanged at 28.
Prof. Kamal Uddin confirmed that the final draft of the revised constitution will be uploaded to the university's website following approval from the Vice-Chancellor.
Alongside the constitutional updates, preparations for the long-awaited CUCSU and hall union elections are progressing rapidly.
The final voter list will be published today, and the distribution of nomination papers is set to begin tomorrow, September 14, continuing through September 15 between 10am and 4pm. The nomination fee has been fixed at Tk 300 for CUCSU candidates and Tk 200 for hall union candidates.
Candidates must submit their nomination papers by 3pm on September 17. The scrutiny of nominations will take place on September 18, and the initial list of candidates will be announced on September 21. September 23 has been fixed as the last date for withdrawal of candidature, with the final list of candidates to be published on September 25.
This upcoming election carries historical significance. While CUCSU elections are intended to be held annually, the last one took place on February 8, 1990, with Nazim Uddin elected as Vice President and Azim Uddin as General Secretary.
That election was held two decades after the university's founding in 1966. Since then, CUCSU has remained inactive for 35 years. With the 2025 election, the student body is poised to reclaim its democratic platform and voice on campus.
