DHAKA, Sept 13, 2025 (BSS) - Bangla Academy Director General (DG) Prof Mohammad Azam today said the education sector should be given priority for fundamental reforms across all sectors of the country.

He made the remarks while speaking at a discussion organized by the Anti-Discrimination Students' Movement at the International Mother Language Institute here today. The discussion was titled "What will our textbooks be like?"

Referring to the United Nations (UN) recommendation that countries allocate at least 6 percent of their GDP to education, the DG said that developed countries spend about 8 percent of their budgets on education. However, in Bangladesh, the education budget is insufficient to meet the sector's needs.

Prof Azam also said that election manifestos should clearly state whether political parties plan to increase the education budget.

Other guests at the discussion addressed various issues related to the country's education system.
