People's participation key to checking crimes: Police Commissioner

DHAKA, Sept 13, 2025 (BSS) - Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner SM Sazzat Ali today stressed on people’s participation in checking crimes saying “people’s participation is crucial in containing the crimes”. 

In this context, he also lauded the initiative of the commoners for bringing the entire areas of Gulshan, Banani, Baridhara and Niketon under CCTV coverage to check crimes.

"With the initiative and financial support of the residents of Gulshan, Banani, Baridhara, and Niketon, CCTVs have been set up in the areas. It will help prevent crimes and identity the criminals," he said.

He made the remarks while attending a special meeting organized by the Law and Order Coordination Committee (LOCC) at Gulshan Police Station here today as the chief guest.

LOCC President Barrister Omar Sadat said that LOCC was established with the joint initiative of Gulshan, Baridhara, Banani, and Niketan Societies to build a bridge of trust between the police and the public. 

Initially, it started with 25 CCTV cameras, but currently, security services are being provided in the entire area through about 1500 CCTV cameras.

The organization's Secretary General Shamsul Arefin Chowdhury presented the technical aspects and said that this organization, which was built with public funding, is being run entirely under the supervision of the DMP. 

Vice President Shawkat Hossain Dilon said that due to the installation of CCTV cameras throughout the area, street crime is practically non-existent. 

In its 13-year journey, LOCC has proven how it is possible to make the security system more effective by using modern technology through citizen-police cooperation, he said.

The people present there expressed their opinion that this success in the Gulshan-Baridhara area can become a model for other areas of the capital.

The DMP Commissioner inspected the activities of the CCTV cameras installed in the Gulshan Thana Bhaban.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Additional Police Commissioner (Administration) Md. Sarwar, Additional Police Commissioner (Crime and Operations) SN Md. Nazrul Islam, Additional Police Commissioner (Traffic) Md. Zillur Rahman, along with senior DMP officials and leaders of Gulshan, Banani, Baridhara, and Niketan societies, were present in the special meeting.
