Deposition recording in Ashulia body burning case begins tomorrow

DHAKA, Sept 14, 2025 (BSS) - The deposition recording in body burning case after shooting down six people during last year's July-August mass uprising in Ashulia area begins at the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-2 tomorrow.

The ICT-2 headed by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury fixed tomorrow for recording depositions of the prosecution witnesses following a petition submitted by Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam this morning. 

The Chief Prosecutor delivered his introductory speech before the court on behalf of the prosecution team of the ICT.

According to the ICT sources, seven out of eight accused arrested in this case, have claimed themselves as innocent but former Sub-Inspector of Ashulia Thana Sheikh Afzalul Haque wanted to be state approver after giving confessional statement in this connection. 

The tribunal accepted the confessional statement of SI Afzal but did not respond to his petition to be state approver till today.

The tribunal on July 2 accepted the formal charges against 16 accused of the case and framed charges against them on August 21 last and started trial of the case.

Eight accused, out of 16, were present before the tribunal during the hearing. They are- former additional superintendent (Crime and Ops) of Dhaka District Police Md Abdullahil Kafi, former additional superintendent of police (Savar circle) Md Shahidul Islam, Inspector Arafat Hossain, SI Malek, S I Arafat Uddin, SI Sheikh Afzalul Haque, assistant sub-inspector Kamrul Hassan and constable Mukul.

Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam alleged that the accused police personnel tried to burn bodies of six youth keeping on a police van after killing them by firing on August 5 in 2024. They also set fire to a youth by pouring petrol on him who was alive at that time. 

On September 11 last year, a case was filed against 16 people with the ICT for their alleged involvement in such crimes against humanity.
