DHAKA, Nov 25, 2025 (BSS) - BNP Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan has affirmed that the party will extend full cooperation to the Election Commission (EC) to hold free, fair and impartial national elections slated for February.

“BNP remains committed to upholding the electoral code of conduct and supporting a credible voting process,” he said.

He made the remarks this evening following a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin at the Nirbachan Bhaban at Agargaon in the capital.

A four-member BNP delegation—comprising Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, a member of the party’s Chairperson’s advisory council member Ismail Zabiullah, and former EC acting secretary Dr. Mohammad Zakaria—joined the discussions.

Election Commissioner Md. Anwarul Islam Sarker was also present.

The Senior BNP leader reiterated that the party’s cooperation is aimed at ensuring the success of the democratic movement for which it has fought over the past 16 years.

He highlighted the sacrifices made by BNP activists over the years, noting disappearances, deaths, imprisonment and harassment.

Khan said the party’s long struggle, culminating in the recent mass movement, was aimed at restoring democracy—something achievable only through fair elections.

Khan welcomed the EC’s initiative to register expatriate Bangladeshis as voters, calling it a fulfillment of BNP’s demand.

However, he urged the commission to extend registration timelines in countries with large expatriate populations, such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE, where many Bangladeshis face difficulties accessing registration centers.

The BNP leader also requested that Bangladeshi passports be accepted as valid identity documents for expatriate voter registration in cases where National ID cards are unavailable.

According to him, the EC responded positively and agreed to consider the proposal.

Regarding the newly approved referendum law, Nazrul Islam Khan said the decision came following broad discussions.

On questions about law and order, he emphasized that security is inseparable from a free and impartial electoral environment.
