DHAKA, Dec 28, 2025 (BSS) - Former interim government adviser and frontline July uprising leader Mahfuj Alam said that maintaining his long-standing political position is more important than contesting an election as a Jamaat-NCP alliance candidate in any Dhaka constituency.

"Rather than becoming a Jamaat-NCP alliance candidate in any constituency in Dhaka, it is more important for me to uphold my long-standing position," he said in a Facebook post this evening, dismissing speculation about his electoral future.

Mahfuj said the Nagorik Committee and the National Citizen Party (NCP) were formed and organised under the frontline leadership of the July Uprising, noting that many of his July comrades remain active in those platforms.

Over the past one and a half years, Mahfuz said he has supported them through advice, guidance, and policy-level cooperation.

He reiterated that his political position has consistently focused on establishing a new political and economic order, resisting fascism through cultural struggle, confronting social fascism, promoting reconciliation and building a society based on responsibility and compassion.

Mahfuj said he had made sustained efforts to shape the NCP into an independent and broad-based "July umbrella" platform, but those efforts could not be realised due to various constraints.

While affirming continued respect and solidarity with his July comrades, Mahfuj made it clear that he is not joining the NCP at this stage. He also rejected claims that he was not offered a proposal by the Jamaat-NCP alliance, saying such claims were incorrect.

Referring to the current political situation, Mahfuj described Bangladesh as being in a phase of "cold war" politics and said it was prudent to remain firm in one's principles without aligning with any side.

He said the possibility of an alternative, moderate youth and July-based political force remains alive and pledged to continue his political, cultural, and intellectual engagement based on the principles he has upheld over the past one and a half years.
