12 DU students receive Japan's NEF scholarships

DHAKA, Jan 21, 2026 (BSS) - Twelve meritorious students of different departments under the Faculty of Biological Sciences and the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences of the Dhaka University have received scholarships from Japan's Nagao Natural Environment Foundation (NEF).

Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan handed over 
scholarship cheques to the students at a programme held today at the Vice-
Chancellor's conference room.

Dean of the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences Professor Dr Md 
Humayun Kabir, Chairman of the Botany Department Professor Dr Asfaq Ahmed, 
Coordinator of the DU NEF Scholarship Programme Professor Dr Muhammad Jabed 
Hossain and Professor Dr Md Anwar Hossain Bhuiyan of Geology Department were 
present on the occasion.

Addressing the programme, Prof. Niaz Ahmed urged the students to play 
effective roles in strengthening social unity and maintaining peace and 
harmony in society. 

He said students must work together to raise public awareness about 
environmental conservation.

The scholarship recipients are Jannatul Mawa Momita, Saeeda Farha Shahrin and 
Suhana Mourin from Botany Department; Md Mazharul Islam from Fisheries 
department; Jinnatul Islam Protyasha and Marufa Parvin Karina from Disaster 
Science and Climate Resilience department; Joyita Saha from Microbiology 
department; Md Tahsin Reza Ananta from Soil, Water and Environment 
department; Sara Moni from Geography and Environment department; Md Rajib 
from Meteorology department; Monisha Dey from Oceanography department; and 
Noshin Tasfia Muna from Zoology department.

Established in 1989, the Nagao Natural Environment Foundation aims to promote 
nature conservation in developing countries, particularly in the Asia-Pacific 
region. 

As part of this initiative, NEF provides scholarships to university students 
interested in studying environmental conservation.

Every year, the Dhaka University NEF Committee invites applications from 
students of the Faculty of Biological Sciences and the Faculty of Earth and 
Environmental Sciences for scholarship.

The scholarship recipients are expected to pursue higher degrees in natural 
sciences, acquire knowledge on nature conservation and apply that knowledge 
in their future professional lives.
