DHAKA, Jan 24, 2026 (BSS) - A total of 45 doctors of Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) today donated 25 high quality wheelchairs for patients taking treatment at the medical university.

The BMU doctors, who were previously deprived of promotion for years and subjected to discrimination, took the kind initiative.

It may be mentioned here that these doctors, who had been deprived of promotion during the tenure of previous Awami League government, had filed a writ petition in the High Court. The current administration has already removed all the discrimination they faced.

The wheelchairs were formally handed over to the university administration at a programme held at the ground floor of the B block of the university.

At the wheelchair handover ceremony, Vice-Chancellor of the university Prof. Dr. Md. Shahinul Alam, said that those who continued to work in both favorable and adverse times are the true leaders.

He stated that the doctors of BMU who were deprived of promotion in the past have set a noble example today. They could have chosen to go on a picnic or celebrate in other ways, but instead they thought about the patients and donated these wheelchairs for them, he added.

This is truly a great humanitarian example and one worthy of emulation, the VC said adding that the BMU has been working for the people of the country and for the welfare of patients by conducting research, providing medical services and producing specialist doctors through higher education.

He also expressed his firm belief that if BMU’s teachers work together, the institution will establish itself as one of the finest medical universities in Asia.

At the event, further encouraging and inspirational speeches were delivered by Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Admin) of the university Prof. Dr. Md. Abul Kalam Azad, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research and Development) Prof. Dr. Md. Mujibur Rahman Hawlader and Director (Hospital) Brigadier General Irteka Rahman.

Among others, Director (Finance and Accounts) of BMU Khandaker Shafiqul Hasan Ratan, Associate Professors Dr. Md. Adnan Hasan Masud, Dr. Md. Abul Kalam Azad, Dr. Md. Abul Kalam Azad and Deputy Director (Hospital) Dr. Sharif Md. Ariful Haque, were also present at the function.
