
CHATTOGRAM, Jan 31, 2026 (BSS)- BNP standing committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury praised Begum Khaleda Zia for her unwavering commitment to politics saying while many politicians compromised or withdrew them from politics under pressure, Khaleda Zia remained steadfast throughout, setting her different from others.
Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said this while speaking at a civic memorial meeting for former Prime Minister and national leader Begum Khaleda Zia at the Kazir Deuri International Convention Hall in the city today.
The meeting was presided over by City Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain, who reflected on Begum Khaleda Zia's active political life. BNP Chairperson's Advisors Golam Akbar Khondoker, Dr. Sukomal Barua, SM Fazlul Haque, Ekushey Padak-winning journalist Dainik Azadi Editor MA Malek, and Indian Assistant High Commissioner Dr. Rajiv Ranjan were among the speakers at the event.
Amir Khasru highlighted Begum Khaleda Zia's journey from an ordinary housewife to a prominent political figure who spent most of her life advocating for democracy.
Despite her relatively short time in power, she dedicated nearly 30 years in fighting for democratic values. Khasru said.
Drawing parallels with global leaders like Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela, Amir Khasru emphasized the depth of Begum Khaleda Zia's sacrifice and the lasting impact on Bangladesh’s political sphere.
Looking ahead, Amir Khasru acknowledged the challenges that lie ahead in the political landscape, noting that the fight for democracy is ongoing. With elections approaching on February 12th, he cautioned that the post-election period may present even greater challenges.
He stressed the importance of continuing the struggle for democracy beyond the election, as the road ahead may be difficult.
Indian Assistant High Commissioner Dr. Rajiv Ranjan praised Begum Khaleda Zia as a visionary leader, highlighting her strong determination and unwavering faith to democracy.
He noted her historic achievement as the first female Prime Minister of Bangladesh and her dedication to democratic values and service to the nation.
Dr. Ranjan also emphasized her significant role in strengthening Bangladesh-India relations.
City Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain echoed the sentiment, stating that the path laid out by Begum Khaleda Zia is crucial for the country's progress.
He highlighted her contributions to democracy, rule of law, justice, and fundamental rights, which serve as inspiration for future generations.
Dr. Hossain emphasized the importance of morality and a sense of responsibility in governance, as exemplified by Begum Khaleda Zia.
