DHAKA, Feb 11, 2026 (BSS) - The United Nations today called for ensuring safe, inclusive and meaningful participation of women in Bangladesh's upcoming parliamentary elections, stressing that protection from intimidation, harassment and digital violence is essential for credible democratic processes.

As Bangladesh prepares for the 13th national parliamentary election scheduled for February 12, the UN underscored that participation in public life is a fundamental right, including for women and girls, women with disabilities, women from minority communities and gender-diverse individuals who may face heightened barriers, discrimination or gender-based violence.

In a statement issued ahead of the polls, the United Nations reiterated its longstanding advocacy for women's meaningful representation and leadership and said it is supporting the Bangladesh Election Commission in efforts to strengthen women's electoral participation and representation.

It stressed that all voters, including women, must be able to participate as candidates and voters without intimidation, discrimination, online abuse or fear of reprisals.

Calling on all stakeholders including political leaders, parties and their supporters, the UN urged adoption of a zero-tolerance approach to intimidation, harassment and any form of violence against women throughout the electoral process.

The statement expressed confidence that authorities would continue to uphold security and the rule of law to ensure the safety and rights of every individual.

The United Nations reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the authorities in safeguarding inclusive, peaceful and credible elections.
