RAJSHAHI, Feb 18, 2026 (BSS) - Shaheed Dr. Shamsuzzoha Day and Teachers' Day were observed at Rajshahi University today with due respect, commemorating the martyrdom anniversary of the country's first martyred intellectual, Shamsuzzoha.

The university administration, along with teachers, students and officials from different departments, marked the day through various programmes.

At 9:00 am, senior university officials led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Saleh Hasan Naqib placed floral wreaths at the grave of Shaheed Dr. Shamsuzzoha and at the Joha memorial plaque located at the university's main gate. They also observed a one-minute silence in his memory.

Later, different departments, residential halls, professional bodies, and political, social and voluntary organisations paid tribute by placing wreaths at the memorial.

Addressing the programme, the Vice-Chancellor said that like previous years, wreaths were placed in memory of Shaheed Shamsuzzoha marking Teachers' Day, and rallies were brought out from various halls and departments.

He noted that the day is observed only at Rajshahi University and expressed hope that all universities and educational institutions across the country would observe it with due importance and dignity. He also voiced optimism that the government would take initiatives to ensure nationwide observance of the day.

Among others present were Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Main Uddin, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Farid Uddin Khan, Treasurer Matiar Rahman and Proctor Dr. Mahbubur Rahman, along with teachers and officials.

On February 18, 1969, Associate Professor of the Department of Chemistry and then Proctor of the university, Dr. Shamsuzzoha, was martyred by gunfire from Pakistani occupation forces. In his memory, the university has been observing the day as Teachers' Day every year.
