DHAKA, Feb 28, 2026 (BSS) - The National Citizen Party (NCP) celebrated its first founding anniversary today, with its Convener Nahid Islam highlighting its journey since the 2024 July Uprising and its political achievements, including victory in six parliamentary seats in the February 12 national elections.
NCP convener Nahid Islam, addressing an Iftar program at Abahani Field in Dhanmondi, said the party aims to strengthen its grassroots organization and further expand its political achievements.
Nahid said, "We won six seats in the recent parliamentary elections, but we are not satisfied with that. In the coming days, we will build upon these successes."
He emphasized that although the NCP was officially formed on February 28, its roots lie in the July mass uprising, which ignited a broader movement against inequality and authoritarian governance in Bangladesh.
Nahid also called upon party leaders and workers to prepare for upcoming local government elections and to consolidate organizational strength at the grassroots level.
He stressed that the NCP will continue to demand reforms and justice, including the implementation of the July Charter and accountability for past acts of oppression and killings.
"Our core principle remains 'Revolution, Alternative, and Reconstruction.' From the energy of revolution, alternative leadership has emerged to rebuild Bangladesh. Our anniversary theme is: 'The nation moves forward on a new path, never to return to fascism,'" he added.
Reflecting on the party's historical context, Nahid Islam recalled a series of significant movements in Bangladesh: the 2013 Hefazat-e-Islam protests, the 2018 quota reform and safe roads movements, anti-VAT campaigns, the Pilkhana massacre, and the student-led uprisings against discrimination. "These events laid the foundation for the creation of the NCP, which officially launched on February 28, 2025," he said.
The event featured messages of goodwill from senior political figures. Home Minister and BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed praised the NCP's achievements, noting that its participation in elections and alliances had secured six parliamentary seats, with the potential to expand influence in the future.
"Many young leaders in Bangladesh will now actively participate in politics through platforms like the NCP, reflecting the aspirations of the people and the spirit of the July 2024 student uprising," he said.
Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar also congratulated the party, highlighting the support it received from hundreds of thousands of voters in its first elections, demonstrating the confidence of the youth and the electorate in the NCP.
Local MP and Minister for Road Transport, Railways, and Shipping Sheikh Robiul Alam also sent his greetings, praising the NCP's achievements.
The program began with a Quran recitation and included speeches by NCP members, including Sayyeda Akhtar, sister of July uprising martyr Ahnaf Abir Ashraful, and Ariful Islam Adeeb, coordinator of the anniversary celebration committee.
A short documentary showcasing the party's journey from the July uprising to its first parliamentary victories was also presented.
The NCP, emerging from the student-led uprising that contributed to the fall of the Awami League government in 2024, continues to focus on youth engagement, political reforms, and accountability, marking a year of growth and ongoing activism in Bangladesh's political landscape.
