CHATTOGRAM, Feb 28, 2026 (BSS) - Mir Mohammad Helal Uddin, State Minister for the Ministry of Chattogram Hill Tracts Affairs, today inaugurated the re-excavation of the historic Mitha Chha canal in Hathazari here.

The canal, located in the Barabil area of Fatepur Union under Hathazari Upazila, was originally dug in 1979 by BNP founder Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman. Over the years, however, the canal gradually lost its navigability due to lack of maintenance and heavy siltation.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Mir Helal said the re-excavation work was launched in response to long-standing demands from local residents. He noted that during the monsoon season, surrounding villages and agricultural lands suffer from severe waterlogging as the silted canal fails to ensure proper water flow.

He said the government plans to gradually re-excavate the entire canal to restore its normal drainage capacity. Once fully restored, the canal is expected to ease waterlogging, improve irrigation and benefit local farmers by resolving agricultural problems in the area.
