CHATTOGRAM, Feb 28, 2026 (BSS) - Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain has stressed the need for widespread public awareness to prevent colorectal cancer, underscoring that awareness and regular screening are vital to protecting city residents from the deadly disease.

He said Bangladesh will observe a month-long Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month beginning March 1, in line with global initiatives. The mayor has formulated a comprehensive plan to implement the awareness programme across the city.

To facilitate the initiative, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed today at the conference room of CSCR Hospital between the Chattogram City Corporation, CSCR and Post Graduate Surgical Academy (PGS Academia). The function was chaired by CSCR Chairman Dr. Khurshid Jamil Chowdhury.

Dr. Shahadat Hossain signed the MoU on behalf of CCC, CSCR Managing Director Dr. Morshedul Karim Chowdhury signed for his institution, and Professor Dr. Khandaker AK Azad, Chairman of PGS Academia, signed on behalf of the academy.

Following the signing ceremony, the mayor inaugurated the month-long colorectal cancer screening programme. Speaking as the chief guest, he urged citizens aged over 40 to undergo regular screening to ensure early detection. He also advised residents to adopt healthy lifestyles, consume fibre-rich foods, avoid smoking and maintain routine health check-ups.

Medical experts at the event highlighted the importance of early diagnosis through colonoscopy and occult blood tests to ensure effective treatment. Free screening services for citizens over 40 will be available at CSCR every Monday and Thursday from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm throughout March.

Authorities also announced that free surgeries will be arranged for patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer, while colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy and occult blood tests will be offered at discounted rates. Indigent patients recommended by the mayor will receive free operations during the month. Expert surgical teams from CSCR and PGS Academia will also conduct screening activities at various institutions across Chattogram as part of the awareness campaign.
