LALMONIRHAT, April 3, 2026 (BSS) - Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu today said a total of 23 multi-purpose flood shelters will be constructed in Lalmonirhat.
"Bangladesh is known globally as a disaster-prone country and ranks among the most vulnerable nations. Various natural and man-made disasters occur in the country almost regularly, affecting the poor and helpless people, particularly women and children," Dulu said.
The minister said these while laying the foundation stone for the construction of a flood shelter at Itapota Government Primary School in Lalmonirhat Sadar this morning.
The project is being implemented by the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED), Lalmonirhat.
He added that the building under construction will serve as a shelter centre during disasters and function as a school during normal times. Such initiatives will play a significant role in disaster management.
The minister also said that in line with election pledges, the government is implementing programmes such as Family Cards, Farmers' Cards, allowances for imams, and various agricultural loan schemes. Despite economic pressures, including a global energy crisis, the government remains committed to public welfare.
He expressed hope that under the leadership of the Prime Minister, the country can be further developed as a democratic and advanced nation.
Lalmonirhat zila parishad administrator AKM Mominul Haque, LGED executive engineer Md Kawser Alam, along with administrative officials, political leaders, and professionals, were present at the programme.
