DHAKA, April 3, 2026 (BSS) - Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan today said building a knowledge-based society is a key indicator of the development of both the state and society, describing books as a powerful medium for the flow of knowledge.
"The importance of books has not diminished despite changes in learning patterns in this internet-based era. Knowledge, experience and history continue to pass from generation to generation through books," he said.
The minister made the remarks as the chief guest while inaugurating a book fair in Pabna.
He said an educated and informed citizenry is essential for ensuring accountable governance in a democratic state, adding that events like book fairs play a vital role in building a knowledge-based and merit-driven generation.
Referring to the country's recent political developments, the minister said people's voting rights have been restored through long struggle and sacrifice, leading to the formation of an elected government.
The minister called for expanding cultural activities with a focus on book fairs and assured full government support in this regard.
BNP lawmaker Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas attended the event as the keynote speaker.
