DHAKA, April 10, 2026 (BSS) - A court here today sent a youth to jail in a case filed over the assault on Jagannath University's (JnU) Department of Mass Communication and Journalism Associate Professor Md Raisul Islam and his father Nazrul Islam after they objected to drug consumption in front of their house.

Dhaka Judicial Magistrate Tanvir Ahmed passed the order as police produced accused Ehsanur Haque Mahim, 22, before the court and prayed for a five-day remand in the case. The court fixed April 12 for hearing the police remand petition.

According to the case documents, Mahim and his associates used to consume drugs in front of the house of Md Raisul Islam in Kalindi Union under Keraniganj Model Police Station. Despite repeated requests from Raisul Islam and his family to stop, the group allegedly threatened them in response.

On April 9, as the youths again gathered in front of their house to take drugs, Raisul's father Nazrul Islam asked them to leave the area.

However, Mahim and his associates first verbally abused him and later assaulted him. As Raisul Islam came forward to help his elderly father, he was also beaten.

Hearing the commotion, neighbours rushed to the scene and managed to apprehend Mahim before handing him over to police. Raisul Islam later filed the case in this connection.
