KHULNA, April 13, 2026 (BSS) - Khulna University Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Md Rezaul Karim today stressed the need for using modern technology to address challenges in the fisheries sector.
He said this while speaking as the chief guest at an inception workshop of a HEAT sub-project titled 'Harnessing the Potential of Phytobiotics by Metagenomics and Immunogenomics Approaches for Green Solutions of Aquaculture Pathogens in the Southwest Coastal Bangladesh' at the university's central research laboratory.
The VC said various diseases affecting shrimp and fish in the southwestern coastal region have become a major challenge for the aquaculture sector.
He emphasised that sustainable and environment-friendly solutions using technologies such as phytobiotics, metagenomics and immunogenomics are now essential.
He added that successful implementation of the research would not only increase production but also help maintain ecological balance.
Speaking as guest of honour, Vice-Chancellor of Khulna Agricultural University Prof Dr Md Nazmul Ahsan expressed hope that the project would produce effective outcomes to meet the growing demand for aquaculture in the region. He also stressed proper management of project funds.
KU Pro-VC Prof Md Harunor Rashid Khan, speaking as a special guest, said unregulated use of chemicals in fish production poses risks to human health.
Chaired by FMRT Discipline Head Professor Dr Sheikh Mostafizur Rahman, the event also addressed by Deputy Director of the Department of Fisheries, Khulna Division, Bipul Kumar Basak.
Professor Dr Md Golam Sarwar discussed the project's framework and work plan through a technical presentation.
Professor Dr Shikdar Saiful Islam delivered the welcome speech outlining the project, while students Md Abdur Rahman and Nabonita Roy conducted the programme.
An open discussion session was held after the inaugural session, chaired by project member Professor Dr Samir Kumar Sadhu.
