PM to open re-excavation of Basia River in Sylhet on May 2: Anee

SYLHET, April 17, 2026 (BSS) - Water Resources Minister Md. Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee today said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will formally inaugurate re-excavation work of Basia River in the district on May 2.

“Basia River was once a connecting point between the Surma River and the Meghna River. Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman visited this area twice during his lifetime. He had initiated the excavation of the Basia River,” he said while visiting Basia River in Masukganj under Sylhet Sadar Upazila.

Mentioning that there are about 5,000 hectares of land around the Basia River, Anee said through re-excavation, irrigation facilities for agriculture will be improved, and local people will be protected from floods and waterlogging.

He called upon people from all levels to cooperate in making the canal excavation programme a successful.

Bangladesh Water Development Board Director General Md Enayet Ullah and Sylhet Deputy Commissioner Md. Sarwar Alam were present, among others, on the occasion.
