Research should grow via in't collaboration, foreign funding: Prof Salam

DHAKA, May 9, 2026 (BSS) - Dhaka University (DU) Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) Prof Dr Abdus Salam today said instead of relying solely on internal funding, the scope and quality of research should be expanded through international collaboration and foreign research grants. 

Prof Salam made the remarks as the chief guest in a seminar titled "Advances in Functional Nanomaterials" held at the seminar room of the Centre for Advanced Research in Sciences (CARS).

The Nanotechnology Center of the University of Dhaka organized the event. 

He said the country must move forward by utilizing the multidimensional applications of nanotechnology in environmental protection, modern healthcare systems, and the electronics sector.

DU Pro-VC further said transforming DU into a world-class research institution requires not only the dissemination of knowledge but also the creation of new knowledge. To achieve this goal, he stressed the importance of ensuring a conducive environment for research.

Center Director Prof Dr Farida Begum presided over the inaugural session. Science Faculty Dean Prof Dr Md Mofazzal Hossain was present as the special guest. Prof Dr Mohammad Mizanur from the Department of Physics and Prof Dr Md Ahsan Habib from the Department of Chemistry presented papers at the seminar. 

The Nanotechnology Center of the University of Dhaka is working toward achieving scientific and technological self-reliance and public welfare through the application, adaptation, expansion, and innovation of nanotechnology in various industrial and service sectors in Bangladesh. The center is expected to play an effective role in advancing nanotechnology-based research in the country.
