Thakurgaon University will emerge as centre of knowledge: VC Shaheen

THAKURGAON, May 19, 2026 (BSS)- Vice-Chancellor of Thakurgaon University Professor Dr. Israfil Shaheen today said Thakurgaon is standing at the threshold of a new dawn as the university would emerge as a centre of knowledge and opportunity for the northern region.

“The long-cherished aspirations of the people of this region are gradually becoming a reality, and Thakurgaon University will play a vital role in fulfilling that dream,” he said.

He said this at a views exchange meeting with local journalists at Thakurgaon Press Club this afternoon.

Acting President of Thakurgaon Press Club Md. Lutfor Rahman Mithu, journalist leaders, journalists from various print and electronic media outlets of the district were present at the meeting, among others.

He expressed his commitment to transforming the university into a quality higher education institution with the cooperation of all stakeholders.

Dr. Shaheen said the current government’s initiatives have created new prospects in education, healthcare, communication and industrialisation in Thakurgaon district. 

“The establishment of the university, a medical college and initiatives to launch an airport and plans for an Export Processing Zone (EPZ) has generated fresh hope among local residents,” he added.

He also noted the Local Government and Rural Development Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir giving his utmost efforts to develop the region.

Dr. Shaheen said he assumed office on May 7 and primary administrative activities of the university had already been completed. 

Preparations are underway to begin academic activities on a limited scale from the 2026-27 academic session, he added.

He urged journalists to provide constructive criticism and support for the university’s development and reputation.

Later, the Vice-Chancellor held a separate meeting with Thakurgaon Deputy Commissioner Rafiqul Haque at the deputy commissioner’s conference room.
