DHAKA, June 17, 2026 (BSS) - Water Resources Minister Md. Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee has called upon the officials and employees of the Centre for Environmental and Geographic Information Services (CEGIS) to work with responsibility for the country's interest and development.
The minister made the call while exchanging views with CEGIS officials and employees at Agargaon in the capital.
"Bangladesh is a riverine country. The CEGIS is playing an important role in sustainable water resources management, dredging and excavation of canals in line with river dynamics, environmental protection, climate change adaptation and conservation of natural resources," Anee said.
The minister said CEGIS activities are intellectual and technical in nature.
Through professional expertise and research, CEGIS has been providing policy support and feasibility assessments for canal excavation, sustainable embankment construction, proper utilization of water resources and development planning.
He also called for the preparation of a proper and accurate database on water resources and canal excavation.
Anee further said that former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia established CEGIS in a full-fledged institutional framework in 2002.
He urged greater focus on formulating development action plans in line with the times, addressing the challenges of climate change and ensuring proper management of water resources and environmental protection.
The minister said that under the leadership of the Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, efforts are underway to build a self-reliant Bangladesh.
He expressed hope that CEGIS will play an effective role in implementing the Delta Plan 2100, raising the groundwater level and increasing the use of surface water.
