CHATTOGRAM, July 3, 2026 (BSS) - Social Welfare and Women and Children Affairs Minister Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain said that Major Ziaur Rahman had taken the responsibility on his shoulder when the nation was in despair in 1971.

He said Zia had valiantly spearheaded the initial uprising in Chattogram as a major of the East Bengal Regiment.

The Social Welfare Minister made these remarks in response to inquiries from journalists after paying his respects and offering prayers at the first grave of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman at Pomra in Rangunia Upazila today (Friday).

Dr. Zahid Hossain said, "There is a reluctance to learn from history. In the past, there have been efforts to disseminate inaccurate historical narratives. Attempts were made to teach our children and the younger generation a distorted version of history."

Earlier, the Social Welfare Minister paid tributes to Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman by laying a wreath at his first tomb in Pomra Zianagar, Rangunia, participating in a special prayer, and planting a tree sapling.

Later, he visited the Rangunia Vocational Training Center for Orphans and Destitute Children, where he distributed clothing and educational materials to the 48th batch of trainees during a program held in the training center's conference room.

Humam Quader Chowdhury, MP, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md. Nazmul Hasan, and leaders and activists of BNP were present while the program was facilitated by Mohammad Shahidul Islam, Director of Chattogram Divisional Social Service Office.

President Ziaur Rahman was first buried in Pomra, Rangunia, after being killed at the Chattogram Circuit House on May 30, 1981. His body was later taken to Dhaka and buried in Chandrima Udyan (now Zia Udyan).
