DHAKA, Sept 9, 2026 (BSS) - The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) today gave in-principle approval to a proposal for implementing a Waste-to-Energy power generation project in the Chattogram City Corporation area on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) basis.

The approvals were given at the CCEA meeting held at the Cabinet Division in the city with Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury in the chair.

The proposal was submitted by the Local Government Division.

Chattogram, the country's second-largest city and a major commercial and industrial hub, generates a substantial volume of municipal solid waste every day.

Waste management has remained a key challenge for the Chattogram City Corporation, particularly in terms of collection, disposal and the availability of suitable landfill space.

A Waste-to-Energy project under the PPP framework is expected to address waste-management challenges while generating electricity from municipal waste, helping reduce the volume of waste requiring disposal and contributing to cleaner urban development.
