HC acquits ex-MP Habib in Hasina's motorcade attack case

DHAKA, Feb 27, 2025 (BSS) - The High Court (HC) today acquitted former BNP lawmaker Habibul Islam Habib of the charges in a case lodged over the 2002 attack on the motorcade of the then leader of the opposition Sheikh Hasina in Satkhira.

A High Court division bench of Justice Mohammad Ali and Justice Sk Tahsin Ali passed the order, allowing a revision plea, challenging the lower court judgment that convicted and sentenced him to 10-year jail in the case, of the former lawmaker.

"The High Court did not pass any order regarding the other convicts as it only hear the revision plea filed by Habibul Islam Habib," appellant's lawyer Md Aminul Islam said.

Habib's wife Advocate Shahanara Akter Bokul filed the plea for her husband as his filing lawyer.

The attack took place in Kolaroa, Satkhira on August 30, 2002. The attackers vandalized a couple of vehicles of the convoy too.

Satkhira Chief Judicial Magistrate Court on February 4, 2021, sentenced three people including Habib to 10 years imprisonment, three others to nine years in imprisonment and 44 others to different jail terms with a minimum of four years in the case.
