CHATTOGRAM, April 20, 2025 (BSS) - City Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain said the eviction activities can be made successful only by convincing the hawkers, not by using force.
“We have tried to convince all parties that hawker management is essential to ease traffic congestion in the city," he added.

Dr Shahdat said these while inspecting the process of evicting illegal structures from the sidewalks and hawkers’ rehabilitation in the New Market area of the city this afternoon.

He said the sidewalks must be cleared from encroachments to ensure the convenience of the city's residents.

“In addition, initiatives have been taken to rehabilitate the hawkers step by step, keeping in mind the livelihood of the hawkers. Together, we want to make the city a beautiful and livable city," he added.

Regarding the rehabilitation of hawkers, the mayor said, ‘Hawkers will not be able to sit on the sidewalks in the morning. They will be able to sit from 3 pm to 11 pm. It will be organized more step by step. In the future, we plan to transform it into an ‘evening market’.

“We have considered two specific places for hawker rehabilitation,” he added.
