Jubo League member Shimul held in Khulna

KHULNA, Mar 5, 2025 (BSS) – Police arrested a member of Jubo League from the city’s Nur Nagar area in the early hours of today.

Khulna district unit Jubo League Shahnewaz Biswas Shimul, 52, son of Abdul Majid of Dumuria upazila in the district, was arrested around 3.00am today during a police raid, Md Taimur Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Detective Branch of Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) confirmed.

The OC said that Shimul was a close associate of ex-land minister and Parliament Member Narayan Chandra Chanda.

He was an Awami League backed member candidate for Khulna Zila Parishad election last year. He was allegedly involved in spreading anti-government propaganda secretly for the last few months.

The OC further mentioned that on July 27, 2024, Shimul and his cohorts, equipped with arms and local weapons, carried out an attack on the residence of the BNP’s city unit president Shafiqul Alam Mona.

Since the BNP leader was not at home at that time, they attacked at his in-laws' house. The attackers vandalized the house, causing damages worth Taka 9 lakh.

Following this incident, a case was filed with the Khulna Sadar police station on December 12 last year. Shimul was arrested as a suspect in this case, he said.

Later, he was sent to jail when he was produced before a Khulna Metropolitan Magistrate Court.
