SAVAR, April 14, 2025(BSS) - Police have arrested Apel Mahmud alias 'Tokay Apel', an accused in ten criminal cases including seven murders during the 2024 July uprising.

A team from the Savar Model Thana police arrested Tokay Apel, 45, from a rented house in Narayanganj town last night, additional superintendent of police of Savar circle Md Shainur Kabir told BSS.

Apel was a close associate of Manjurul Alam Rajib, former Savar upazila chairman and also general secretary of upazila unit of fallen Awami League.

He is accused of being involved in a rage of crimes including mugging, rioting and raping in Savar and Ashulia areas.

He went on hiding after fascist Hasina's ouster on August 5, 2024.

To avoid arrest, he first took refuge at his father-in-law's house in Pabna, then moved to Bogura and finally settled in Narayanganj town.

Police eventually traced his location using advanced surveillance technology, leading to his arrest.

Apel, son of Shukur, also known as Butcher Shukur, of Bhatpara in Savar municipality, was also reportedly involved in vandalizing and looting the homes of local BNP leaders during last year's anti-discrimination student movement.

Police have produced Apel in court and requested a seven-day remand for further interrogation.
