DU VC mourns death of eminent botanist Shamsul Islam

DHAKA, April 14, 2025 (BSS) - Dhaka University (DU) Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Niaz Ahmed Khan has expressed his condolence on the death of renowned botanist and retired professor Ahmad Shamsul Islam of the university's Botany Department.

In a condolence message today, the VC paid tribute to Prof Islam's significant contributions to botanical education and research in Bangladesh.

Prof Islam also played a pioneering role in introducing genetic engineering and biotechnology in the country, said the VC.

The VC extended heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family and prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul.

Prof Islam, an Ekushey Padak recipient, was the founder of the Plant Tissue Culture Laboratory and the Bangladesh Association of Plant Tissue Culture and Biotechnology.

He passed away today at the age of 101 while undergoing treatment at a city hospital.
