An escaped prisoner, murder case accused held in Tongi

DHAKA, April 17, 2025 (BSS) – The Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU) of the police on Wednesday arrested an accused in a murder case who escaped from the jail, from Tongi thana area in Gazipur district.
 
The arrestee has been identified as Md Shamim Mia alias Heda (26), son of late Shah Ali of Bangaon Purbapara under Jhenaigati police station of Sherpur district.
 
An operational team of the Mymensingh divisional office of the ATU arrested Shamim in a raid conducted at Banomala rail station area under Tongi police station around 8:30pm on Wednesday, said an ATU press release today.
 
Shamim was in jail in a murder case filed under sections 394,302,201 and 34 of the penal code with Jhenaigati Police Station on February 10 in 2023.
 
He escaped from the Sherpur district jail on August 5, 2024 cashing on the turmoil situation after ousting the previous government in the face of Anti –Discrimination Student Movement.
 
The jail authority filed a case with Sherpur Police Station under sections 143, 447, 186, 332, 353, 225, 386,436, 427 and 34 of the Penal Code on August 13 in 2024.
