DHAKA, May 12, 2025 (BSS) - The Election Commission (EC) today issued a gazette notification banning registration of Awami League.
EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed confirmed it to reporters after a meeting of the EC.
"The decision was taken in continuation of the notification issued by the Home Ministry," he said.
According the notification, as the Home Ministry of the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh in its SRO No. 137-Act/2025, dated 12 May 2025, by virtue of the powers conferred by the Anti-Terrorism (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025 and Section 18(1) of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 2009, has prohibited all activities including any publication, any kind of campaign, procession, meeting, conference, etc. by the Bangladesh Awami League and all its front, associate and brotherly organizations in the mass media, online and social media, until the trial of the leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Awami League and all its front, associate and brotherly organizations is completed.
Therefore, the Bangladesh Election Commission hereby suspends the registration (No.-006 dated: 03/11/2008) of the Bangladesh Awami League as a political party.
