BHOLA, May 18, 2025 (BSS) - Fish farming in cage is gaining popularity in the district as the initiative ultimately increases fish output and has made fishermen financially benefitted.
More than one hundred marginal fishermen are being encouraged in fish farming by applying cage setting in the river and canals at Char Semaiya, Bhelumia and Beduria under Bhola Sadar upazila.
This fish farming system is cost-effective as the farmers do not require their own pond or water bodies to carry out fish farming under the system.
Even the fishermen are mainly manufacturing cage by using GI pipe, drum and net at a cost of Taka 10,000-12,000 and each cage is usually accommodate with maximum 1000fishes, said the fish farmers.
Regarding the financial benefit from the farming system, the fish farmers said a farmer can cultivate fish for two times in a year under the system and a farmer can earn Taka 25,000-30,000 annually from the farming system.
Mono sex Tilapia, Pangas, Sarputi and carp fishes are being usually cultivated under the farming system as the selling price of these fishes are up to Taka 200-220, per kg.
Even the growth of the fish fries are comparatively high than the fish cultured in ponds, they said, adding that the taste of the fishes is also different and delicious due to cultivating in the river water.
The demand of these fishes is also high and the farmer's are getting better price through selling those fishes in the market.
About the benefit of the system, district fisheries officer Bishwajit Kumar Dev said "The fish farming in cage has no risk of disease and less damage due to natural disaster".
Even the government is considering assist the fisheries entrepreneurs aiming to motivate the marginal fish farmers with the technology, the official added.
