Child dies of injuries in Aftab Nagar gas explosion, 4 hospitalized

DHAKA, May 18, 2025 (BSS) - A child succumbed to her burn injuries while undergoing treatment at National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery today as she received severe burn injuries in a gas explosion at a residence in Dakshin Anand Nagar of Aftab Nagar area on Friday night. 

The deceased was Tanjila, a four-year-old girl.

Tanjila passed away around 3:00pm, confirmed Dr Shaon Bin Rahman, resident physician of the institute, stating she had suffered 66 percent burns.

The tragic incident occurred around midnight on Friday when a gas leakage triggered an explosion on the ground floor of a house near the Ansar Camp Bazar in Dakshin Anand Nagar, under Badda Police Station. 

Five members of the same family were seriously injured in the blast.

Mohammad Sharif, a neighbor who helped rescue the victims, said the injured family's head, Mohammad Tofazzal, works as a daily wage laborer and hails from Thakurgaon district.

Currently, four members of the family remain admitted to the burn institute with severe injuries. 

Tofazzal, the father, sustained 80 percent burns, while the mother, Mansura, suffered 67 percent burns. Their daughters Mithila and Tanisha sustained 60 and 30 percent burns respectively.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the gas leakage, which led to the deadly explosion.
