6 held over Tk 21 lakh robbery in Mirpur, foreign pistols, looted money seized

DHAKA, June 18, 2025 (BSS) – The Detective Branch (DB) of police has arrested six people with looted money, a foreign pistol, domestic weapons, a microbus and three motorcycles in a sensational incident of robbery of Tk 21 lakh and foreign currency from a money exchange trader in Mirpur-10 area of the capital in the broad daylight on May 27 last.

The arrested individual have been identified as Md. Zafar (33), Mostafizur Rahman (40), Saikat Hossain alias Dipu Mridha (52), Md. Sohag Hasan (34), Md. Jalil Molla (52) and Palash Ahmed (26).

They were arrested after conducting a series of raids in Dhaka, Barisal, Patuakhali, Mymensingh and Jessore districts. The DB police arrested the mastermind of the robbery gang, Jalil Molla, along with other members Mostafiz, Palash, Dipu and Sohag on Tuesday. 

Using information technology and based on the information obtained in the analysis of intelligence information, the DB earlier identified a Hiace microbus used in the incident and arrested the driver of the microbus, Zafar and seized the microbus from the Tongi area of Gazipur.

Joint Commissioner of DB (South) Mohammad Nasirul Islam revealed the information today in a press briefing held at the DMP Media Centre at Mintoo Road in the capital.   

The DB personnel also seized over Tk 5 lakh of the looted money, counterfeit currencies worth over Tk 2 lakh, three motorcycles and a microbus used in the robbery from the possessions of the detainees.  

In addition, a foreign pistol, two rounds of bullets, a machete and three toy pistols used in the robbery have also been seized. 

“All the arrested are professional robbers and there are multiple cases of robbery, murder, illegal weapons and other crimes against them in various police stations of the country including Dhaka Metropolitan City,” the DB officer said.

Investigation of the case is in progress and efforts are ongoing to arrest others involved in the incident and recover the remaining money and goods, he added.

Earlier on May 27, 2025, seven to eight criminals at gunpoint looted Tk 21 lakh and foreign currencies from Russell, owner of an organization called Mahmud Money Exchange, and his brother-in-law Zahidul Haque Chowdhury  in an alley between Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium and Fire Service at 09:40 in the morning.

A case was later registered with Mirpur Model Police Station in this connection.
