5 remanded over snatching of Tk 22 lakh in Mirpur

DHAKA, June 18, 2025 (BSS) – A Dhaka court today placed five people on a three-day remand each in a case lodged over firing blank shots and snatching Taka 22 lakh from a money exchange trader from the capital’s Mirpur area on May 27.

The remanded accused are Mostafizur Rahman, 40, Saikat Hossain, 52, Md Sohagh Hasan, 34, Jalil Molla, 52, and Palash Ahmed, 26.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam passed the order as police produced the five before the court and pleaded to place them on a 10-day remand each in the case.

They were arrested after conducting a series of raids in Dhaka, Barisal, Patuakhali, Mymensingh and Jessore districts. The DB police arrested the mastermind of the robbery gang, Jalil Molla, along with other members Mostafiz, Palash, Dipu and Sohag on Tuesday.

Earlier on May 27, 2025, seven to eight criminals at gunpoint looted Taka 21.70 lakh and foreign currencies from Russell, owner of Mahmud Money Exchange, and his brother-in-law Zahidul Haque Chowdhury in an alley between Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium and Fire Service at 09:40 in the morning. The snatchers fired blank shots to create panic and they even stabbed Zahidul on his hip.

The case was later registered with Mirpur Model Police Station in this connection.
