DHAKA, June 19, 2025 (BSS) - Police have apprehended five suspects including
a dismissed police official and a retired military sergeant involved in
Saturday's mugging in Dhaka's Uttara, where criminals wearing RAB uniform,
snatched Taka 1.08 crore from a representative of mobile financial service
provider Nagad.
The arrested have been identified as Md. Hasan (35), Golam Mostafa alias
Shahin (50), Sheikh Md. Jalal Uddin alias Rabiul (43), Md. Imdadul Sharif
(28) and Md. Saiful Islam alias Shipon (27)
Police apprehended them after conducting a series of raids at different
places in the capital on Wednesday. Over Taka 22.10 in cash, Taka 12 lakh
deposited in a bank and a Hiace brand private car were seized from their
possessions.
Md Muhidul Islam, deputy commissioner of DMP's Uttara Division briefed the
media regarding the operation and arrests at the DMP Media Centre on Minto
Road in the capital this afternoon.
According to police and DB, the leader of the gang of robbers, Mostafa alias
Shahin is a dismissed policeman and Sheikh Md. Jalal Uddin is a retired
sergeant of the army.
The gang has confessed during initial interrogation that it has been robbing
different areas of the country for a long time in the name of RAB and police,
it said.
The mystery of sensational incident of robbery of 1.08 from a distributor of
Nagad Company in Uttara area of the capital has been revealed with capturing
five members of the gang, Muhidul said.
Police said that a Nagad distributor Abdul Khalek Nayan, along with four
employees of the company left his house at 37, Road No. 12, Uttara, with four
bags containing 1,0811000 for the Nagad office in Uttara on two motorcycles
at 8.55 am on June 14, 2025.
On the way of Nagad office, a black Hiace microbus stopped them at the
junction of Road No. 12 and Road No. 13 six to seven unidentified persons
wearing black clothes inscribed with the word 'RAB'.
They got out of the microbus by covering their faces with black clothes with
weapons in their hands.
Seeing them approaching, the employees carrying the money tried to run away
with the bags containing the money.
The miscreants then chased them and snatched the money from four bags and
tied the hands and eyes of three of the employees and beat them up.
One employee managed to escape from the scene. Later, the robbers left the
three of them in the Brindavan area of Sector 17 of Turag Police Station and
fled with the money, two official mobile phones and three personal mobile
phones.
A case was registered with Uttara West Police Station in this incident.
After this sensational mugging, Uttara Division and DB immediately started
working to unravel the mystery of the incident and arrest the accused and
recover the looted money.
A smart team consisting of Uttara Division of police and other police
personnel led by the Deputy Police Commissioner of Uttara Division identified
the microbus and driver used in the incident with the help of information
technology.
Then on Wednesday at 1:45 pm, a team from Uttara Paschim Police Station
arrested the driver of the microbus, Md. Hasan, from the Khilgaon Police
Station area.
At that time, a fake nameplate, Taka 8,500 in cash and the microbus were
seized from his possession.
According to DB Uttara Division, a team from DB Uttara Division identified
those involved in the robbery by analyzing CCTV footage of the scene and its
surrounding areas and with the help of information technology.
Later, the mastermind of the robbery gang, Golam Mostafa Gharami alias
Shahin, was arrested from the Uttara area of Dhaka at 10:40 pm on Wednesday.
At that time, the looted amount of Taka 13, 34,500 was seized from his
custody.
Then, based on the information given by the arrested Shahin, Md. Imdadul
Sharif was arrested from the Baitul Aman Housing area under Adabor Police
Station with Taka 8,04780 in cash at 11:50 pm on Wednesday.
Following information extracted from Shahin and Sharif, retired sergeant
Sheikh Md. Jalal Uddin from the army was arrested from the Sabujbag area with
Taka 63,000 in cash on the same night.
DB sources said that based on the information provided by the arrested
persons, another member of the gang, Md. Saiful Islam alias Shipon, was
arrested from the Airport Railway Station area on Wednesday night.
Fake ID cards of RAB and police, sticks, signal lights, wallets with army
logos, cheque books of various banks and mobile phones were seized from the
custody of the arrested persons.
