Ex DU Prof Dr Azharul Islam passes away

DHAKA, June 19, 2025 (BSS) - Ex Professor of Dhaka University (DU)'s Institute of Education and Research (IER) Dr Md Azharul Islam passed away while undergoing treatment at a hospital in the capital at 1 pm today. 

He was 70.

IER Professor Mujibur Rahman, his son-in-law, said that Azharul had been suffering from various complications including heart disease and kidney disease for a long time.

He is survived by two daughters. 

His first Namaz-e-Janaza was held after Asr prayers today at the IER, where he spent much of his professional life. His second Janaza took place after Maghrib prayers at Kataban Dhal Mosque.

He will be laid to rest tomorrow (Friday) following Jumma prayers at his family graveyard at his ancestral village of Barura in Cumilla after Namaz-e-Janaza there.

Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan expressed deep sorrow at the passing of Dr Islam, stating, "His contributions to education and research will be remembered with great respect".

IER Director Hosne Ara Begum also expressed profound grief at the death of late DU Prof Dr Azharul Islam.
