DHAKA, June 21, 2025 (BSS) - The government has adopted a strict stance against the illegal production of banned polythene.

A special taskforce operation, led by the Department of Environment, was conducted today in Tilarghati and Sataish areas of Tongi, Gazipur, targeting unauthorized polythene production and distribution units.

The operation was headed by Executive Magistrates Md SaiduzzamanHimu and Ishtiaq Ahmed, said an official handout.

Members of the armed forces, police, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Ansar, and officials from the Department of Environment participated in the drive.

Simultaneous drives were carried out in seven separate factories during the operation. A total of 2,400 kilograms of banned polythene and polypropylene (PP) granules-used as raw materials for polythene production were seized.

These confiscated materials have been placed under the custody of the Deputy Director (DD) of the Department of Environment.

Among the factories, the owner of 'Rafi Enterprise', Nazrul Islam, was sentenced to three months' imprisonment by a mobile court for violating environmental regulations.

Other establishments raided include 'Bhai Bhai Poly Packaging', 'Mayer Doa Packaging', 'Natex Thread & Trim', and 'Zonayed Packaging', along with two additional packaging units.

The Department of Environment has initiated legal proceedings to file regular cases against three of the identified factories. It has confirmed that appropriate legal action is being taken in this regard.

The department reaffirmed that nationwide operations against illegal polythene production and distribution will continue and that strict actions will be taken in the future to ensure the protection of the environment.
