DHAKA, June 22, 2025 (BSS) – Speakers at a meeting citing the World Health Organization (WHO) revealed that 11.90 lakh road users die annually in road crashes across the globe.

Ahsania Mission organized the view-exchange meeting titled “Road Safety Law is Necessary for Everyone” in the capital’s Shyamoli, said a press release.

Sharmin Rahman, Road Safety Project Coordinator of Dhaka Ahsania Mission, said that 92 percent of road crash deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries, with over half of the fatalities involving pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists.

According to the World Health Ranking, she said, Bangladesh ranks 106th out of 183 countries most affected by road accidents, adding that “without enacting and properly enforcing the road safety law, it is impossible to reduce or prevent road crashes in the country”.

She emphasized that with appropriate legislation and enforcement, road accidents—which currently pose a serious challenge—can be significantly reduced, underscoring the need for a coordinated “Road Safety Law” that benefits everyone.

The discussion was moderated by Shuvro Deb, senior journalist of the daily Manab Zamin. Speakers included Shipping and Communication Reporters’ Forum (SCRF) General Secretary and UNB special correspondent Muhammad Jahangir Alam, Daily Ittefaq Senior Reporter Jamimul Ahsan Shipu, and Daily Jugantor Staff Reporter Imon Rahman. They each highlighted the importance of enacting the proposed “Road Safety Law” to ensure safer roads.

Mokhlesur Rahman, Deputy Director of Dhaka Ahsania Mission’s Health Sector, delivered the vote of thanks.
