Canadian envoy meets Jamaat Ameer

DHAKA, June 23, 2025 (BSS) - Canadian envoy to Dhaka Ajit Singh today met with Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman at Jamaat office in city's Moghbazar area.

During the meeting, discussions were held on issues related to the interest of Bangladesh and Canada, said a press release. 

The High Commissioner was accompanied by Senior Political Officer Siobhan Kerr and Political and Economic Advisor Nisar Ahmed.

Jamaat-e-Islami Nayeb-e-Ameer and former MP Professor Mujibur Rahman, former MP Dr Syed Abdullah Md Taher, Secretary General and former MP Professor Mia Golam Parwar, Assistant Secretary Generals Maulana Rafiqul Islam Khan and Advocate Ehsanul Mahbub Zubair, Central Executive Council Member and Secretary of the Central Publicity and Media Department Advocate Matiur Rahman Akand, Dhaka Metropolitan South Ameer Nurul Islam Bulbul and Jamaat Ameer's Foreign Affairs Adviser Professor Dr Mahmudul Hasan were present at the event.

After the meeting, Dr Syed Abdullah Md Taher told reporters that the Canadian high commissioner has asked them about the dialogue between political parties and the Consensus Commission. They have informed them that they, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and almost all the notable political parties of the country, have jointly held dialogues with the Consensus Commission on reform issues several times, he added.

He said that discussions have also been held on issues such as not allowing the same person to serve as prime minister more than twice, a bicameral parliament, preparing of a new voter list to include expatriates and elections using a proportional representation system.

He said, "We have told the government that a level playing field needs to be created for free, fair and peaceful elections. We have conveyed our concern to the interim government so that no one else can become a fascist".

Dr Taher said a large budget is needed to cover the expenses related to the elections, including CCTV cameras. "In this regard, we have appealed to development partners and friendly countries, including Canada, for financial donations. The High Commissioner told us that he will take the initiative to coordinate the issue of financial donations through the United Nations," he added.
