ACC launches probe into senior NBR officials over alleged corruption, tax evasion

DHAKA, July 1, 2025 (BSS) - The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has initiated an investigation into allegations of widespread irregularities involving several senior officials of the National Board of Revenue (NBR). 

The probe centering accusations of bribery, abuse of power and facilitating large-scale tax and customs evasion, said a press release.

ACC Assistant Director Md Tanzir Ahmed confirmed the matter today, stating that ACC has been investigating the officials for allegedly amassing wealth beyond their known sources of income.

The officials under scrutiny include Additional Commissioner, VAT & Large Taxpayer Unit Abdul Rashid Mia, NBR Member Lutful Azim, Former Additional Director General, Central Intelligence Cell (NBR) Mohammad Alamgir Hossain, Deputy Tax Commissioner of Dhaka Tax Region-16 Mohammad Shihabul Islam and Joint Commissioner of NBR Md Tarek Hasan.

According to the ACC, these officials are suspected of engaging in corruption, favoritism and serious irregularities while holding various posts across the country. 

Personally benefiting from these misconducts caused significant financial harm to the state, the release added.
